Submersible Pump

A submersible pump is a pump that can be fully immersed under water. A submersible pump pushes water to the surface using pressure and never needs to be primed as it is already submerged in fluid. Submersible pumps are quiet as they are under water and some submersible pumps can handle differing sized solids. The water around the submersible pump helps to keep the motor cool.

The word submersible when relating to pumps is a water pump designed to operate while submerged underwater. As the submersible pump is surrounded by water the motor is kept cool. A submersible pump is often referred to as a sump pump. The motor of the pump is sealed. A submersible pump converts rotary energy into kinetic energy into pressure energy in order for the submersible pump to push water to the surface. The water is first pulled into the pump, the impeller rotates and pushes the water through the diffuser sending the water to the surface.

Submersible pumps never have to be primed because they are already submerged in the fluid they are to move and are energy efficient because they dont have to use their energy moving the water into the pump as the pressure of the water in the sump area the pump is sitting in pushes the water into the pump. Some submersible pumps are rated to handle certain sizes of solids or soft solids while some submerible pumps are best used for liquids only. A submersible pump is a quieter pump because they are situated under water. The main maintenance issue on most pumps is the seals and with submersible pumps if the seal is damaged the water can get into the motor and render it useless until it is repaired.

There are many submersible pumps on the market. Single stage submersible pumps are general used for domestic and house applications and light industrial applications. Submersible pumps with multiple stages are used for underground use and heavy duty industrial applications.

Water Pumps Now Australia has a wide selection of submersible pumps for domestic pressure pump applications, domestic rain to mains and industrial submersible pump applications.
