Mechanical seals are intended to prevent the fluid ( water or oil ) used by a machine or pump from leaking to the external environment ( the atmosphere or a body of water ).

Mechanical seals are critical components in pump systems. These devices preserve the integrity of the pump by preventing fluid leaks and keeping contaminants out. Mechanical seals are used on various seal designs to detect leakage, control the seal environment and lubricate secondary seals.

Over time the mechanical seals in a pump will degrade and require replacing. Seals degrade over time due to normal wear and tear and can be caused by dry running of your pump.

Some signs of a mechanical seal requiring replacement are:

• Leaking around the seal area
• Spraying at the seal area
• Pump is loosing prime
• Pump is not building up to the expected pressure
