Flooded Suction

Flooded suction in pumps refers to the liquid flowing to the pump inlet from a higher source meaning it is gravity fed.

The design of a flooded suction pump means the pump will be able to self-prime as there is always fluid in the suction line from the fluid source to the pump.

Flooded suction pumps come in both vertical and horizontal pumps and are used to move fluids from one point to another. The pump is positioned outside the tank at either the bottom of the tank or underneath the tank so gravity will constantly feed the pump with the fluid whilst the pump is operating. Suction pumps are always primed ready to go.

When using a flooded suction pump a non-return valve should always be fitted before the inlet of the pump so the pressure of the fluid can be closed when the pump is not in use.
